Jack Horner

Chef Matt Wilkinson has unveiled a new menu for Jack Horner – the Brunswick East canteen/kitchen/grocery store he opened with Pope Joan/Hams and Bacon business partner Ben Foster in May 2015.
Jack Horner now offers all-day breakfast, an array of showstopper lunch plates, rotating seasonal salads and ‘from the pot’ braises – available to eat-in or takeaway, seven days a week.
We loved the selection of lunch plates.
The Schnitzel (made with crumbs, parmesan and parsley) were one of the highlights from our visit.
As we sank our teeth through the crispy crumbed layer of the crumbs, it unleashed moreish and tender morsels of chicken – just beautiful. It was a simple dish, done well.
Each lunch plate comes with a small seasonal salad. Far from being just side dishes, denied due love and attention, Jack Horner’s side dishes are a welcome deviation from the norm with each individual salad being wonderfully fresh, perfectly seasoned and delicious.
You can also pile your side plate high with Jack’s house pickle (cucumber, parmesan and olive crumbs), homemade cheese, garlic bread or fried potatoes (with sour cream and smoked onion salt).
If you're looking for something sweet to have with their excellent coffee, you should not (must not) go past Jack Horner's brownies. The classic brownie was perhaps one of the best we have ever tried. Possessing the perfect exterior crunchy layer with a dense cakey layer to follow before a perfectly gooey interior.  It was captivating!
As well as flour, sugar, salt, bread, cheese and eggs, the Jack Horner grocery store shelves are piled with household essentials including fresh meat, seasonal fruit ‘n’ veg, chocolate, spices, marinades, toiletries and even a little bottle-o with a carefully curated selection of every-changing wine, beer and cider.
With an emphasis on tried and true flavour combinations with a modern twist, Jack Horner profiles the finest in Victorian produce and celebrates what true casual dining is all about – simple and fresh ingredients done well.
