Son in Law embodies the vibrancy of Collingwood through its bright, bold and energetic food offerings and design.
A new venture by Tony Rungpradit and his wife Oh who previously owned and ran Chapel Street favourite Ayatana, Tony and Oh have taken their love of Thai cuisine to the next level with Son in Law. An array of contemporary street food emerges, while paying homage to traditional flavours and ingredients. The menu boasts an exciting mix of traditional and contemporary, with creative street food, complementing cocktails and plenty of enticing vegetarian dishes.
The playfully contrasting décor demonstrates the son/mother in law relationship. The traditional and free mix together in an exciting and ultimately harmonious melting pot.
Sweet crunchy tamarind salad
The salad of sweet crunchy roasted tamarind rice had an intriguing combination of bean shoot, carrot, green apple, roasted coconut and crispy noodles. All the dazzlingly fresh ingredients blended harmoniously, resulting in a clean and bright dish with a perfect salt-sour-heat balance.
Minced pork & prawn rice paper
We also had some beautiful rice paper rolls. Once again, these were bursting with freshness and were finely assembled. Adorned with sesame seaweed salad (a modern take on the original), it was an explosion of flavours.
Roast duck bao
Featuring the tried and true flavour combination of cucumber, coriander and hoisin sauce, it contained a slice of tender roast duck and really hit the mark.
Crispy soft shell crab & tiger prawns curry
The soft shell crab and tiger prawns curry showed balance and style, with an appetising level of chilli power. The Thai green curry was luxurious, incredibly flavoursome and exhibited a marvellous aromatic lift.
Massaman curry
Slow braised lamb shank, cinnamon, roasted cashew nuts and sweet potatoes
The lamb shank in the massaman curry had been cooked gently, the tender meat falling off the bone, combining wonderfully with the tender sweet potato pieces which echoed a similar texture.
Steamed coconut pandan puddings
Desserts at Son in Law are similarly well conceived. The steamed coconut pandan puddings had a delicious balance of sweet and savoury from the use of salty sweet coconut milk and boasted a smooth gooey texture.
Marshmallow & nutella puffs served with berries, crushed cashew nuts, French Vanilla ice cream
The Marshmallow & nutella puffs were stunning. Ethereal in texture, the pastry was the perfect canvas for the sticky Nutella and marshmallow which had combined to form a decadent concoction.
