Hash is the perfect embodiment of a thriving Melbourne café. The new kid on the Hardware Street block, it has already earned its standing as a weekend brunch mecca, drawing in the crowds week in week out with its consistently excellent food, fantastic coffee and cheerful wait staff.
The two-level open plan space creates a warm atmosphere; the central coffee bar stands out with steel finishes, while ply wood walls and concrete polished floors give an industrialized feel.
Head chef, Adam Pruckner (formerly of Code Black) has created an impressive menu with offerings that showcase his diverse experience working as a chef in many of Melbourne’s hottest cafes. Pruckner’s all day breakfast and lunch menu focuses on signature dishes made from local produce.
Protein comes from beloved old-fashioned butcher, Newmarket Quality Meats, bread is Zeally Bay Organic Bakers and sustainable seafood comes from Clamms. The beautiful edible flowers you will see on some of the dishes come from flower farm Edible.
As expected of any great Melbourne café, the coffee is excellent. Co-owners Syed Mirranay and Ben Lou have brought in accomplished barista Alex Asimakopoulos who has selected Zest Coffee beans and is working on a Slayer coffee machine.
The house-roasted signature blend is a combination of Kenyan and Ethiopian single origin beans that produce a sweet and fruity cup of coffee that is full of acidic complexity. There is also a great selection of drip, filter and immersion brews.
Beef check sandwich
The feature component of this respectable assembly of breakfast items was the braised beef cheek. Imparting a beautiful depth flavour from being cooked in an earthy braising sauce, it was beautifully tender, and was slathered a top fresh celeriac remoulade. The salsa verde was a great addition which brought a lovely acidity to this almighty sandwich.
Yellow fin tuna
This dish was well balanced, loaded with umami and complex. The citrus mayo dressing cradled the fragrant baby herbs and watercress and brought the whole dish together. The tuna itself was both beautiful and beautifully prepared.
Grilled banana and pecan loaf
An absolute show stopper, the dish of Grilled banana and pecan loaf was stunning. A large cube of fluffy banana and pecan loaf which boasted a crispy exterior was adorned with macadamias, milk crumbs, blueberries and burnt honey mascarpone and luxurious white chocolate custard. It was a wonderfully decadent breakfast treat that amalgamated the best things in life.
Hash Hot Chocolate
We couldn't leave without trying their famous hot chocolate. The standout Hash Hot Chocolate was as picture perfect as it was delicious. Made with MORK Dark (85% Cocoa) chocolate brewed to perfection and served with fairy floss to add that candy like sweetness, this was a truly delectable treat.
